Gay Madrid
Most of Madrid's gay bars, clubs and shops are in Chueca, the everyday name for the Justicia quarter north of the Gran Vía, between Calle de Fuencarral and the Paseo de Recoletos. Calle de Pelayo, Calle de Gravina, Calle de las Infantas and Calle de la Libertad hold most of them within a few minutes' walk of Plaza de Chueca and Plaza de Pedro Zerolo.
Across Fuencarral, on the Malasaña side, Calle de Valverde has a sauna, a cruising bar and a gay hostal. Some of the clubs are south of the Gran Vía towards Sol, the Axel Hotel is on Calle de Atocha, and two saunas are further south in the Palacio quarter. Outside the centre are Pajas entre Colegas, a masturbation club for men in Argüelles, and three parks with entries as cruising areas.

The year in Madrid
MADO, the Madrid Pride festival, takes over the centre at the turn of June and July. It opens with a speech on Plaza de Pedro Zerolo, then stages stand in Chueca, on Puerta del Sol, Plaza del Rey and Plaza de España for several nights. The State Pride march runs from Atocha along the Paseo del Prado and the Paseo de Recoletos to Plaza de Colón; in 2026 it was on Saturday 4 July.

Where to go
Chueca
Chueca is the Justicia quarter, named after Plaza de Chueca and its metro station. Calle de Pelayo has the longest run of gay businesses, from Bears Bar and the shops at its lower end up to DLRO Live. Gravina, Infantas, Libertad and San Bartolomé hold most of the other bars, and the clubs Long Play, Studio 54 and Fluide Escape are a few steps away.
Plaza de Pedro Zerolo, renamed in 2016 after the LGBT activist and city councillor, is where MADO opens every year. Libreria Berkana, a gay bookshop, is on Calle de Hortaleza, and Sauna Octopus is at the northern edge of the quarter on Calle de Churruca.

The Malasaña side: Valverde and La Puebla
West of Calle de Fuencarral begins the Universidad quarter, the area most people call Malasaña. On Calle de Valverde are Sauna Center, the cruising bar Boyberry Madrid and Hostal La Zona, with Republik Club round the corner on Calle de la Puebla and Sauna Paraiso further north on Calle del Norte.

Sol, Palacio and Lavapiés

Argüelles
Pajas entre Colegas, a masturbation club for men run as a private association, is in Argüelles, on Calle del Marqués de Urquijo, north-west of the centre. It opens on scheduled dates only, and visitors join and book online before they go.

From the airport
Metro line 8 runs from the airport to Nuevos Ministerios, where you change for the centre, and Cercanías trains leave from Terminal 4. The Exprés Aeropuerto bus runs around the clock to Cibeles and, during the day, on to Atocha; the ticket is bought on the bus.
Getting home at night
After 23:30 the night buses take over, known as búhos. Every line starts or ends at Plaza de Cibeles, and the fare is the same as during the day.
