Munich police are looking for witnesses to an attack on two young people in the Glockenbachviertel, the quarter where most of the city's gay bars are. According to the force's own account, issued as a press release on 5 August 2026, the two were sitting on a bench at Stephansplatz at about 22:15 on Sunday 2 August 2026 when a man from a group of six offered them drugs. They declined. The group then insulted them repeatedly in homophobic and transphobic terms, and when the two walked away, one person from the group followed and sprayed them with pepper spray. Both were slightly injured and did not need medical treatment. They reported the attack the following day.
Kommissariat 44 is investigating on suspicion of dangerous bodily harm and insult. The appeal asks anyone who noticed anything around Stephansplatz and Thalkirchner Straße in that time window to contact the Munich police on 089 2910-0, or any police station.
The Munich district association of the Greens published a statement on 8 August 2026 condemning the attack, and said an assault of this kind in the Glockenbachviertel shows how far the climate has shifted for LGBTIQ people. Their statement is filed under the date the police released the appeal rather than the date of the attack itself, which is worth knowing if you are matching up reports.
What this means for a visitor is narrow, and worth keeping narrow. This was a single incident on a public square, and nothing in the police account connects it to a venue. The case follows the attack on Berlin Pride in late July 2026, after which Bavaria's interior minister said the police would review the security arrangements for the state's remaining CSDs and strengthen them where needed, while stating that there were no concrete indications of planned attacks in Bavaria.
