Sex Shop Metropolis is on Nueva Fuera, a quiet street inside the medieval centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz. It opened in the early 1980s and is the oldest shop of its kind in the Basque Country. New owners took it over in 2022 and stripped the vinyl off the window, so after four decades it finally looks out onto the street.
It still has video cabins, the only ones left in the Basque Country, and it still sells DVDs, which almost nobody does any more. The rest of the stock runs to toys, lingerie including harnesses and men's underwear, BDSM and bondage gear, lubricants, condoms and a shelf of erotic writing.
The shop grew up around a gay clientele. The current owners have widened the range towards women and straight couples without dropping that, and describe what they do as advice rather than selling. There is an online shop under the name Dark Rose, and orders placed there can be picked up in store.
