El Carmen is the anchor of Málaga's LGBT quarter, on the Plaza de la Merced at the top of the old town. It has been open more than fifteen years and calls itself the funniest LGBT+ bar in the city, which is a fair summary of what it does.
It runs all day. Breakfast, lunch, creative tapas and cocktails on a large terrace facing the square, then a show programme in the evening: drag bingo with two rounds of prizes, a prize-wheel night, and a retro disco show built on 80s and 90s music with classic drag performers. The bar also takes private bookings for birthdays and parties.
The terrace is the reason to arrive early. It faces one of the busiest squares in Málaga and fills up, and it is where the scene starts before the clubs open.
