About

Axel Hotel Bilbao is the newest urban property in the Axel Hotels portfolio, opening in 2024 on the banks of the Nervión estuary in the Bilbao La Vieja neighbourhood. The building has a strong industrial character with architectural nods to the nearby Guggenheim Museum, with copper materials and undulating metal structures informing the interior design. The hotel is positioned on the Muelle de la Merced, facing the river, with the Casco Viejo a short walk across the water. Facilities include a pool, gym, sauna, jacuzzi and a rooftop skybar. The hotel runs regular shows and events, and its location in Bilbao La Vieja puts it within the most culturally active part of the city.

I had a really great stay at Axel Hotel in Bilbao.

First of all, the rooms are spacious, modern, and extremely clean. Honestly, it might be the cleanest hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Every detail felt spotless and well maintained. Even the minibar was properly stocked, which is becoming rare in many EU hotels nowadays - such a small thing, but it makes a difference.

The service was friendly and professional throughout the stay, and the sleeping quality was perfect. Comfortable bed, quiet atmosphere, exactly what I needed.

My room had a beautiful view of the river and the hotel is located right on the edge of Bilbao’s old town, which makes it ideal for walking everywhere while still enjoying a slightly calmer setting.

The hotel is LGBT+ friendly (something I didn’t realize at the time of booking), but that didn’t bother me at all. On the contrary, the small, subtle messages around the hotel and in the room promoting inclusivity and openness were actually quite cute and gave the place extra personality and warmth.

Overall, a very pleasant experience. I would definitely stay here again when visiting Bilbao.

Absolutely a top LGBTQi plus hotel which has a diverse team of workers. This hotel is a must stay for all seasoned boys or girls. Great for couples LGBTQi plus. Excellent pool at the top which is only open summertime.

There is a 2nd small pool in the lower floors with 6 loungers and hot tub fountain features plus excellent gym and massage service.

Breakfast is excellent at 17 euros and excellent bar. The hotel has really comfy beds and room amenities. Bring your own slippers or robe if you booked a standard room.

Washoom has bidet attached which works perfectly with adjustable temperature.

Sleep was perfect without any noise from the hallway.

I was able to order food from outside which arrived within 15 min

Kettle and fridge in room.

Air conditioning works perfectly.

Hotel is suitable for older people and people with disabilities.

I had a wonderful stay at Axel Hotel Bilbao. The location is fantastic, right near the market, the river, and the old town — perfect for exploring the city on foot.

The service was excellent, and the staff were very friendly and always willing to help, which made the stay even more enjoyable. The hotel is very clean, modern, and well-maintained, with no signs of damp or mold anywhere.

The breakfast was excellent, offering a wide variety of options and very good quality products.

Overall, Axel Hotel Bilbao exceeded my expectations — I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

Staff friendly and helpful. Our rooms were so clean and everything you need is supplied, hairdryer, iron, ironing board. Lovely views over river and old town. Great rooftop views. Only downside is area behind the hotel. Definitely not a place to wander, but actually have no need as everything to do and see is in front of hotel and along the river. Would highly recommend and would stay again.

The location was excellent — close to everything we wanted to see and do. The room was clean, tidy and beautifully furnished. Everything felt new and well-maintained. The staff were very friendly and always quick to respond to any request.

The main issue was the poor sound insulation. You can clearly hear when your neighbor opens or closes their door — it actually feels as if someone is using your own door.

Another point is the breakfast. Unfortunately, it was quite disappointing. It was hard to find something simple and tasty to eat. I tried the tortilla, which was very oily, and then the stewed vegetables, which at first seemed spoiled. Later, I asked the staff and they explained that vinegar is added to them — but honestly, the taste was really unpleasant. The next day they served cauliflower prepared in the same way, again with vinegar, and it wasn’t good either.

The selection was limited, mostly sweet pastries, which isn’t ideal if you prefer healthy food. There were almost no healthy options available.
