Backstage opened in 2009 in Ruela da Estacada, an alley in the old fishing quarter behind the marina, and for years it was the gay club in a city that had almost nothing else. It is still there and still late.
The crowd has broadened a long way since. The family who run it put the change plainly: it started out roughly nine parts gay to one part straight, and now everybody comes. The house line is "come as you are", and the door works on that basis.
Musically it is eclectic on purpose, with booked DJ nights, touring acts and drag rather than one resident sound. For a room this size it has pulled in names that normally play much bigger stages.
If you want somewhere explicitly and only queer, this is not it, and the city has one bar that is. If you want the club A Coruña's queer nightlife grew out of and that still keeps the door open on those terms, it is.
