Claro Boba is the one bar in A Coruña that puts LGBTQI+ on its own front door rather than on a list of things it tolerates. It sits on Rúa do Socorro, a couple of streets back from the Orzán seafront, and it is a late-night room rather than somewhere to start the evening.
Drag is the reason most people come. Shows run at weekends, built around performers from the city and the rest of Galicia, with visiting artists on the bigger nights and a competition format the bar puts on itself. The programme changes from month to month.
The venue calls itself a safe space and has the record to go with it. It works with the local LGBTQI+ associations, gives its stage to independent performers, and in 2019 the city's affective and sexual freedom association gave it the Marcela y Elisa award for that work. Its own line is "no tenemos armarios", we have no closets.
The room is small, mixed across the letters and across ages, and friends of the house come too. A busy night means a full floor.
