About this Event
This is Legnano's first Pride. An informal committee of local collectives and associations built it rather than an established organisation, and it is paid for entirely out of private donations, with no public money in it.
The march starts at Piazza Monumento, under the statue of the warrior the town takes as its emblem, and ends in Piazza Mercato with a stage, music, speeches and information stands. The organisers put that statue into the Pride's logo in rainbow colours, which drew objections from local politicians and turned into a public argument about who a town's symbols belong to. The route does not pass through Piazza San Magno, the main square, and that has been argued over too.
The motto reworks a line of the Italian national anthem: "Se dall'Alpi a Sicilia dovunque è Legnano, Legnano deve essere la casa di tuttə". The manifesto behind it was written collectively at open tables with residents and rests on five pillars: LGBTQIA+ rights, transfeminism, antiracism and decolonialism, disability and anti-ableism, and ecology.
Legnano is about twenty-five minutes from Milan, and the committee's argument for a Pride here is that the scene has drained towards the city and left the Alto Milanese with almost nothing of its own. They want a permanent queer centre in the town out of it.
