Hafen is a gay bar on Motzstr. in Schoeneberg, a few steps from Nollendorfplatz and directly opposite the row of bars that has defined this corner of Berlin since the 1970s. It calls itself a tanzbar, and that is accurate: there is a bar, a small floor, and a programme of DJ nights that runs all week.
The music leans pop, schlager and retro rather than techno, which sets Hafen apart from most of what Berlin is known for. Sunday nights are a fixture. The crowd is mostly gay men, a wide age range, and a solid share of Schoeneberg regulars alongside visitors who have walked over from the neighbouring bars.
The room is small and gets full, so the door and the pavement outside often turn into part of the evening. Staff and much of the crowd speak English.
