The Schwules Museum in Tiergarten is one of the largest institutions in the world devoted to queer history and culture. It opened in 1985, grew out of the Berlin gay movement, and has been at its Luetzowstr. address since 2013.
The programme runs on changing exhibitions rather than a fixed collection display, covering gay, lesbian, trans and wider queer history: the Berlin scene, rural queer life, lesbian and women's movements, persecution under the Nazi state, activism and art. Shows change several times a year.
The museum also holds a research library and an archive, both usable by visitors, with periodicals, personal papers, photographs and posters. It is run largely by volunteers and members and hosts talks, film screenings and readings alongside the exhibitions.
