Tropics Day Spa is Portsmouth's gay sauna and the only one in Hampshire. It has been going for close to thirty years, near the top of Commercial Road in Somers Town, a few minutes on foot from Portsmouth and Southsea station.
Inside there are two dry Swedish sauna cabins, a steam room and whirlpool tubs, and a roof terrace planted with tropical and semi tropical greenery where the hot tub sits in the open air. Food and drinks are served, and the kitchen holds a five star rating from the Food Standards Agency. A treatment room on the ground floor does massage, with a shower and fresh towels laid on.
The spa is men only and strictly over eighteen, so bring photo ID and expect to be asked for it however old you look. One entry covers the rest of the visit, and there is a pass out scheme if you want to leave and come back the same day. The way in is deliberately discreet: head for the rear of the building, where there are parking spaces and a cycle rack, and look for the pink door with the red staircase up to reception.
