This is a real working men's club, built in 1953 and still carrying the wood panelling, the raised stage and the sprung dance floor that came with it. Since the mid-2000s it has been programmed as one of East London's central queer cabaret and party venues, and the contrast between the room and what happens in it is the point.
The programme runs to burlesque, drag, comedy, live music and club nights, much of it under long-running party names rather than the venue's own. Performance is close-up: the stage is low and the room is not large.
It is not exclusively a queer venue and never has been, but a large part of what it hosts is, and it has been a fixture for the East London drag scene for two decades.
