The William Morris Bar is a neighbourhood gay pub on Forest Road in Walthamstow, named after the designer who grew up in the area. It is a long way out from Soho, in a part of London with almost no other queer venues, and it functions as the local rather than as a destination.
The programme is what a local runs: karaoke, bingo, live music, life drawing, quiz nights. The crowd is older on average than the central bars and largely made up of regulars from the surrounding streets.
It is worth knowing about precisely because of where it is. Outer East London lost most of its scene, and this is one of the few pubs still doing the job.
