Royal Vauxhall Tavern

Bars in London, United Kingdom

About

The Royal Vauxhall Tavern stands on its own at the corner of Kennington Lane and Goding Street, a free-standing Victorian pub left behind by the redevelopment around it. In 2015 it became the first building in the country listed by Historic England specifically for its importance to LGBTQ+ history.

Inside it is essentially one room with a stage, and the stage is the point. The programme runs to cabaret, drag, live performance, comedy and club nights, and the place works as a performance space first and a bar second. Acts range from long-running residencies to one-off shows, and the crowd changes with them.

The venue publishes a code of conduct and asks audiences to respect performers. It is a small room, so shows sell out.
