Halfway to Heaven has been a gay pub since 1991, tucked beside St Martin-in-the-Fields just off Trafalgar Square. The name is geography: it sits roughly midway between Soho and the Heaven nightclub under Charing Cross.
Upstairs is a small local bar, all dark wood and rainbow flags in the windows. Downstairs is a low cabaret room, and that is what the pub is for. Drag and cabaret run there through the week, along with karaoke, and the room is small enough that the performers work the audience directly.
It is a stop rather than a destination for most people, which is the point of where it stands.
