The New Penny is Leeds' longest continuously operating gay pub. It began life as the Hope & Anchor in 1953 and took its current name in 1982, on Call Lane in the Calls district. English Heritage marked the building with a blue plaque recognising that history.
Inside it's a small, clubby room with a relaxed, friendly crowd rather than a nightclub feel, and it stays open late into the night. It calls itself the oldest gay bar in Leeds, a claim backed by its heritage recognition and long trading history.
It sits a short walk from the Briggate cluster of bars, in a quieter corner of the gay village.
