Fern Howe Guest House is a bed and breakfast in Braithwaite, a village near Keswick between Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake, close to Whinlatter Forest and on the Coast to Coast cycle route. It is a white Lakeland house high on the hillside, and it is also the hosts' family home.
There are ten en-suite rooms: doubles, a super king or twin, a twin, two singles and two family suites. Most look out to the fells, Skiddaw, Latrigg, Blencathra, Walla Crag and Catbells among them, and the rest face the hillside garden, a courtyard or the six acres of woodland behind the house, which is protected for red squirrels. There is a guest lounge with a bay window looking out to the fells, books, maps and games, and an outdoor seating area. The house has its own parking.
Breakfast is a cooked Cumberland breakfast with local sausage, bacon and free-range eggs, with a vegetarian version and continental options, and vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free food on request. The house uses Fairtrade tea, coffee and chocolate and buys locally where it can.
