The Brighton Birdcage opened on Gloucester Road in the North Laine in May 2019 and describes itself as an LGBTQIA+ boutique specialising in drag, trans and crossdressing.
Wigs are what it is known for. There is a wall of them, in lace front and non-lace, styled and unstyled, and the shop restyles and takes commissions, which is the part that brings performers back. Beyond that: theatrical make-up, body shaping, jewellery, accessories and a range of gifts.
It is a small shop that does a lot of advice, and the staff are used to first-timers. Styled wigs take a few weeks to come through, so it is worth allowing time if you want something made rather than picked off the shelf. There is an online shop as well.
