The Birdcage

The Birdcage opened in 2026 on the seafront at Kemptown, in the ground floor of the Amsterdam Hotel building where the hotel's own bar used to be. It describes itself as part cocktail bar, part entertainment venue and part community hub, and the programme backs that up.

There is a stage and a resident cast of drag performers, hosts and DJs, so cabaret runs through the week alongside comedy, quizzes, bingo and live music. The room is decorated in a green and gold palm-print art deco style rather than the usual black box, and there is a terrace out front facing the sea.

The bar makes a point of putting local performers on rather than touring names, and of working with community organisations. It can be hired privately.
