The Nightingale is the oldest and the largest LGBTQ+ venue in Birmingham. It started in 1969 as a members-only club in a terraced house on Camp Hill, moved through Aston and Thorp Street, and has been on Kent Street since 1999.
The building holds around two thousand people across three floors, with four rooms and five bars. The rooms are programmed separately: pop, hyperpop, house and drum and bass in one, emo and indie in another, R&B, hip hop, dancehall and bashment in a third. Drag shows and go-go dancers are part of the regular billing, and the club also puts on one-off nights and Pride weekend parties.
Entry is 18 and over and photo ID is checked at the door. Only a current driving licence, provisional licence or passport is accepted. Everyone is searched on the way in. The toilets are gender-neutral throughout.
