The Maverick sits on the corner of Union Street and Donegall Street, in the part of Belfast the bars there call the Rainbow Quarter. Its own line is an invitation to take a walk on the wild side, and the programme is mostly drag: house queens, guest acts, and an open showcase night where newer performers try material out in front of an audience.
There is karaoke, live music, comedy, an open mic and a pool table. The crowd is mixed and it draws more queer women than most of the other bars on the street.
Two other venues share the building. Boombox is the club above, with its own door on Donegall Street, and The Reporter is the quieter bar alongside.
