Mälarpaviljongen

Restaurants | Bars in Stockholm, Sweden

About

Mälarpaviljongen is a garden restaurant, café and bar built out over the water on Norr Mälarstrand on Kungsholmen. The pavilion itself dates from 1943 and the present restaurant has run since 2004. Tables sit on floating pontoons among trees and planting, which is why it fills up the moment the weather turns.

It is owned and run by LGBTQ people and was started by activists, and it has stayed part of the scene rather than merely welcoming it. The house rosé funds the Rainbow Fund, which supports LGBTQ rights work internationally, and the restaurant hosts QX events and Pride programming; the Pride parade passes close by.

The crowd is thoroughly mixed, families and office lunches alongside the regulars. The kitchen does modern Swedish cooking, and there is a plant shop and a café in the same garden. It is a summer place and closes for the winter.
