Livraria Aberta is a queer bookshop on Rua do Paraíso, east of the centre towards Bonfim. It describes itself as a queer bookshop in exactly those words, which in Portugal is still uncommon.
The stock is the reason to go: queer fiction and theory, translations, small presses, and a good deal that is hard to find anywhere else in the country. The shelves run from Burroughs and Audre Lorde to recent histories of queer culture, in Portuguese and in English.
It also works as a meeting place rather than only a till. There are talks, readings and book launches, several of them held in English.
