Café de Prins has been the gay bar on Zwanestraat since 2017. Three friends opened it on the grounds that there was too little going on in Groningen for young gay men, and it has since become the bar most people in the city name first.
It works as a café early and a dance bar later, with wine and craft beer alongside the usual taps. The programme is busy: drag shows, karaoke, a pub quiz, klaverjas evenings, and the Eurovision semi-finals and final on screen. The music at the weekend is pop and chart.
The crowd is young and heavily student, which is what Groningen is, and the bar is open to anyone. Its own line is meet, drink, celebrate and dance.
