MooiMan shows art in which the male body is the subject. It opened in December 2006, after an Amsterdam gallery working the same ground closed, and it says there are only two comparable galleries in Europe and none at all outside it.
Six or so exhibitions a year pass through the rooms, drawn from a pool of international artists, and the work covers painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. Plenty of it is pointed rather than decorative: shows have gone directly at queer identity, at religion, and at work that can no longer be exhibited in Russia under its laws on homosexuality. Pieces can be bought, and some can be rented.
There is a sculpture garden behind the building, which is part of the visit rather than an afterthought. The gallery also sells second-hand art books left to it, and puts the proceeds towards LGBT Asylum Support.
