About

De Kurk calls itself a queer café, and it is meant for the whole LGBTQ+ community rather than one corner of it. It opened in March 2024 on the Steenstraat, in the building where Grand Café Metropole used to be. A local queer collective set it up after a run of popular parties in other Arnhem venues and a crowdfunding campaign.

It is a café by day and a bar in the evening, with its own cocktail list. The back room, the Tuinkamer, has a new exhibition every month by an artist from the community, with collage and drawing workshops and pop-up shops to go with it.

Much of the programme comes from the community itself: yoga, burger evenings, gaming nights, café evenings and game afternoons for trans and non-binary people, a dating evening for people over fifty, film, dance workshops and a Halloween party. The crowd is mixed in age and gender. The collective behind the café also runs the Queerparty, which takes over bigger clubs in town.
