Sauna Nieuwezijds is the only gay sauna left in Amsterdam, since Thermos closed after more than thirty years. It sits on a small street off the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, a few minutes from the Dam and walkable from the Reguliersdwarsstraat.
Entry is 18 and over. Towels rather than swimwear, with one designated swimwear evening each week. Caps and underwear are out. Phones stay in the lounge or locker area and photography is not allowed anywhere in the building, which is the rule guests notice most. The sauna publishes a written sexual consent policy, a sexual health page and a transgender policy, and runs a themed programme through the week.
GHB and other hard drugs are banned outright, guests visibly under the influence can be refused, and sex work is not permitted. The sauna is run by the same company as the naked bar Free Willie on the Amstel.
