Maori is a low bar on the water at Triq il-Lanċa, under the Valletta bastions and across from the wreck of HMS Maori that gives it its name. The building is painted head to foot as a giant cat, which is how people find it, and the terrace runs out to the edge of the harbour with hammocks strung on it.
It is the anchor of Valletta's queer and arts crowd rather than a nightclub. Monthly queer club nights run here, artists hang small shows on the walls, and the bar takes part in Malta Pride week.
The house rules are short and the bar posts them itself: cash only, no drinks carried in from anywhere else, and dogs are welcome as long as they get along with the other animals on the front.
