Kaktüs is a queer, women-owned café and bar on Triq Amery, two streets back from the Sliema seafront. It runs as a coffee shop in the daytime and a bar later on, and the vegan food and plant milks are the default here rather than a concession.
Since it opened in 2023 it has become one of the fixed points of the Maltese queer scene. Drag nights, quizzes and DJ sets run through the year, and the room is small enough that a busy night turns into one conversation. Their own line is that the house is open and the family is queer.
The café reported the repeated removal of its rainbow flag to the police as a hate crime, which drew national coverage. A second, larger Kaktüs has since opened on the Ta' Xbiex waterfront.
