L'Alibi is built into one of the caves cut into Monte Testaccio, the artificial hill of broken Roman amphorae, and dates its history back to 1970. That makes it the oldest gay club still running in the city.
The club works on two levels with a roof terrace on top, which is where most of the summer happens. It started as a strictly gay venue and has since opened up, so the crowd on a given night is queer and mixed rather than one or the other.
It registers as an LGBTQIA+ cultural association, and membership is handled at the door.
