Coming Out sits on Via di San Giovanni in Laterano, the street Romans call Gay Street, a few steps from the Colosseum. It has been open since 2001 and calls itself the hub of Rome's LGBTQ community.
Most of the life happens outside. The terrace tables spill onto the street and stay busy from the afternoon coffee crowd through to the small hours, with the Colosseum lit up at the end of the block. Inside is a small bar room where the music gets louder as the night goes on.
The programme runs to drag shows and themed nights, and the kitchen serves food alongside the drinks, so the place works as a restaurant earlier and a bar later. The crowd is mixed, international in high season, and heavily local the rest of the year.
