Antigone opened on Via Kramer in 2016 as an LGBTQ+ and transfeminist bookshop and has become the reference point for that kind of reading in Milan. The stock is built around gender studies, feminism, queer theory and art, with fiction and children's books alongside.
It is a shop rather than a section of a shop, which is the point: titles that reach Italy in small print runs and never make it onto a chain's shelves are here as a matter of course. It also sells cards, gift vouchers and a small range of sex toys.
The shop runs readings, book launches and discussions, and its people are visible in Milan's queer politics beyond the counter. There is a second Antigone in Rome.
