Fico d'India is a beach bar, restaurant and club on the Poetto, the long city beach of Cagliari, where the seafront meets Via dell'Idrovora. It calls itself LGBT+ friendly since 1986, which would make it the oldest fixture of the city's queer nightlife.
It works as a chiringuito. Tables stand on the sand, the kitchen runs through the day, and after dark the place turns into a club with DJ sets, live performances and drag shows. The Mister and Miss Fico d'India contests are the events it is known for.
The crowd is mixed gay and straight and the setting does most of the work: you are on the beach, with the sea on one side and the whole of Cagliari on the other. Much of the queer programme it hosts is put together with the Mood Club in town.
