Tipperary Pride marks its year with a ball rather than a parade. It takes place in a function room at a hotel on the Dublin road out of Thurles, and the organisers describe the idea as going back to when slow songs were cool: dressing up, a dance floor, live acts and a room full of people who mostly know each other.
They say in plain words that it is an LGBTQ+ event and a safe space, which in a county town of this size carries as much of the evening as the music does. It is also the group's fundraiser for the year.
Tickets are sold in advance and there are free equity tickets for anyone who could not otherwise come. Thurles sits between Limerick and Kilkenny with a station on the Dublin to Cork line, and the hotel has rooms, which makes the ball workable as a night away rather than a drive home.
