Alterego Club

About

Budapest has no shortage of gay nightlife, but Alterego has long stood apart as the city's most established gay club. Located on a quiet residential street in District 6, the venue operates as a below-ground space that comes alive every Friday and Saturday night, drawing a genuinely mixed crowd of locals and visitors, young and old alike.
The club spans multiple areas, with two dance floors, several bars, lounge seating for those who prefer conversation over dancing, and an outdoor area for fresh air. What sets Alterego apart from other venues in the city is its midnight drag show, a long-running institution hosted by Lady Dömper, one of the most recognisable figures on the Budapest gay scene. The show runs for around an hour and typically features stand-up, lip sync performances, and dance acts by a rotating cast of drag queens. Once the show wraps, DJs take over and keep the floors going until the early hours.
The club also stages themed nights throughout the year, with special events around Pride, seasonal holidays, and New Year's Eve. A free cloakroom is available on the door.
Alterego has been operating since at least 2007, making it one of the longest-running gay venues in the Hungarian capital and a reliable fixture for anyone exploring Budapest's LGBTQ+ scene.

A very nice club overall. I didn't like the reception's attitude on top of the bar. I think it's an outside company that was hired to deal with the security and payments and they were rude. Besides that it's a great place. Great music. And perfect show. I had fun. And i recommend all tourits to come and support. It's a support for the lgtb community that is going through difficult times unfortunately.

We went on a Friday and had lots of fun. One of the waiters, which appears on a previous comment, wasn't very generous with the drinks, we actually think he served us plain fanta when we asked for a cocktail of fanta with vodka. Aside from this minor inconvenience, the music was fun and the ambiance too. We really enjoyed watching the local drag queens and singing at karaoke.

I visited Alterego last saturday and arrived around 10PM. I was welcomed warmly right from the entrance.

What I liked:
1-The toilets were clean and had no queue.
2-I made friends easily.
3-The bartender was friendly and spoke English.
4-Service at the bar was quick.
5-Beer was only €3.30.
6-The DJ played a fun mix of pop, reggaeton, electronic, and classic hits.
7-The place felt safe and had a very diverse crowd, with people of different ages.
8-There was a drag show, which made the night even more entertaining.
9-There’s a smoking area outside on the pavement. It felt secure and was a nice place to chat with new people.

What could be better:
1-They didn’t play many current songs (for example, “Abracadabra” by Lady Gaga).
2-They don’t sell cigarettes.

There aren’t many gay clubs in Budapest, and Alterego is definitely a good choice if you want to have fun and meet both locals and tourists. I left the club around 2 AM and had a great time overall. I would go back again for a few beers and some dancing!

My experience last night was that people were genuinely trying their best to dance and have fun, but unfortunately, the music was quite disappointing. You could see it on people’s faces — it wasn’t the atmosphere one would expect in a gay club. The selection didn’t seem to cater to any particular age group or musical taste. It’s admirable that Alterego stands in Budapest for so many years, but unfortunatly the music experience doesn’t seem to be a priority for the venue.

I was deeply disappointed and shocked by the treatment I received at the Alterego Club. The aggression and disrespect shown by the security staff (bouncers) completely ruined the evening.
Critical Points:
1. Aggressive Security Staff: From the moment we entered, we were pushed and treated rudely to enforce an unclear line. This bullying behavior continued outside.
2. Problems with the Cloakroom and Smoking Area: The club does not have an indoor smoking area. When we asked for our jackets back to go outside for a smoke, the staff refused to give them to us. We were told that, once we left, we would have to pay for the cloakroom fee to re-enter, an absurd rule and penalizing those who simply want to take a break.
3. Shoving and Unwanted Physical Contact: The most serious incident involved the use of physical force: bouncers physically assaulted people (shoving and aggressively touching) to enforce the absurd rule of staying at least 5 meters away from the bar while smoking. This behavior is unacceptable and violent.
4. Absurd Organization and Rules: The management of the line, coat check, and smoking area is chaotic and disrespectful to customers. We saw a group of at least 10 people refused entry due to the hostile attitude of the staff.
A club that calls itself a "gay disco" should be a refuge, not a place where you are treated with bullying. I strongly advise against Alterego to anyone looking for a safe and welcoming experience in Budapest. It's better to opt for other LGBTQ+ clubs that are more respectful of their patrons.
