Inside:Out is Wuppertal's queer centre, on Hochstraße in Elberfeld's Nordstadt. It shares rooms with the women's centre urania, which put the idea into the city's participatory budget in 2019 and got it funded.
It was set up as an association in 2022 with thirteen founding members. Several of the city's queer groups now sit under one roof here: the school education project, the women's centre, the university's queer committee and the queer youth association. That was the point of it, one address for groups that had been working separately.
The centre runs queer counselling for anyone who is lesbian, gay, bi, pan, trans, inter, non-binary, asexual, aromantic, queer or still working it out, and for the people around them. Counselling happens in person, by phone or by mail, in German or English, and can stay anonymous. It is not legal advice and not psychotherapy.
The rest of the time the rooms are used for what a centre is for: meeting people, dances, games, and finding out what else is going on in the city.
