The NiL is one of the oldest gay venues still running in Munich and sits on the corner of Hans-Sachs-Straße, in the thick of the quarter. The fit-out is Egyptian: hieroglyph panels, a central bar, alcoves and couches along the sides.
It works as a café early and as a bar late. The kitchen does plain German food, schnitzel with a cornflake crust among it, plus stews and soups, and there is a changing dish of the day on the board. The pavement terrace is the part regulars fight over in summer.
The crowd is mixed and skews older than in the club-facing bars nearby, and the place is built for talking rather than dancing.
