CSD Mainz is the Pride of the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital. The demonstration is the high point of the Sommerschwüle, a queer summer festival whose name goes back to the political summer fête that started the city's queer movement in 1993.
The day is built around the march through the city centre, with a rally on the way. It leads to a political street festival with information stands and a stage programme, which in past years has been held on the Malakoff-Terrassen by the Rhine. Groups can register to walk together, and the organisers ask each group to bring its own steward.
Around the demonstration the Sommerschwüle fills several venues in the city with its own programme, from drag shows to a club night after the march.
