Chapeau Mainz is one of the oldest gay bars in the Rhine-Main region and has been a focal point of queer life in the city for over three decades. Located on Kleine Langgasse in the heart of Mainz, it sits just a short walk from the main railway station and draws a loyal, mixed crowd of gays, lesbians, trans people and friends.
The bar is compact and atmospheric, with dark red walls, low lighting and a lived-in character that regulars have long appreciated. Most of the social action takes place at the bar itself, though a handful of upholstered bench seats offer somewhere to settle in for the evening. Smoking is permitted inside, and entry is restricted to those aged 18 and over.
Despite its modest size, Chapeau punches well above its weight when it comes to community spirit. The bar is known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and inclusive ethos, maintaining an open-door policy regardless of gender, sexuality or background. Regular events and special evenings keep the programme varied, and during the summer months outdoor seating is available. A resident DJ takes to the decks for certain events, and the venue has a track record of marking local festivities such as Mainzer Fastnacht with extended programming.
Together with a small number of other venues, Chapeau Mainz forms the backbone of the city's queer scene, making it a reliable and genuinely characterful stop for visitors and residents alike.

The place of my youth. Thirty years ago, this is where I first got involved in the scene. And it hasn't done me any harm. Yesterday, after a long time, we were there again, and what can I say? I still feel right at home. Chapeau is small, quaint, and cozy; it's easy to strike up a conversation. May the place be around for many years to come, because it truly embodies the Mainz scene.
Best regards to Reinhold and his staff.
Nice nice nice
Nice little gay bar in Mainz.
Never before have I heard from the bartender: "You cannot sit here if you don't order another drink.", and I'm 41... I was having a VERY nice conversation with a guy I just met there, and finished my beer approx. 5 mins ago... Even when I came in, the bartender "ran away" from me because, as he admitted himself, couldn't understand my joke in English and it was pretty unpleasant.. Well..he wasn't obliged to understand and speak English, but he was being rude to me the moment I entered the pub. Won't be coming back.
Worst service ever!! It’s so small and the bartender is extremely rude.
