Bar jeder Sicht is the centre for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people in Mainz, and it is the city's queer bar at the same time. The association behind it, Sichtbar Mainz e.V., has kept it going for around twenty years and runs it largely on volunteers. Straight visitors are welcome.
The bar room seats about sixty, with free wifi, a high chair and a box of toys for anyone arriving with children. The centre says its kitchen is shut on financial grounds, so what you get at the counter is drinks and small snacks rather than a meal.
The rest of the house does the work a bar cannot. A qualified team gives confidential counselling on gender and sexual identity and on coming out, to people of any age and to their relatives. There is a library. A lot of groups use the rooms, among them a queer youth group, a kink and fetish meet-up, a Rainbow Refugees group and an English-speaking get-together, and the programme runs to readings, exhibitions, karaoke, quiz nights and a brunch for rainbow families.
A ramp can be put out if you telephone ahead, though the toilets are not wheelchair accessible. The centre works to a written protection policy and says it will handle boundary violations openly.
