Birdcage is a cocktail bar on Rathausstraße, a few steps from Kiel's town hall. It is small: about thirty seats around one long counter, with a backlit spirits shelf running the length of the wall behind it. The bar keeps roughly three hundred bottles and builds its reputation on cocktails.

It calls itself a living room for a large family, and that is close to the tone. Lesbian, gay, bi and trans guests of every age come, plus whoever they bring with them, and it has been the meeting point for Kiel's rainbow community for more than twenty years. Entry is eighteen and over.

There are regular formats: a karaoke night, a quiz, a Friday warm-up, and the pre-party before the monthly Gays and Friends club night across town. Cash and cards are both taken.
