Schwule Sau is the queer culture house of Hannover, in a building in the Nordstadt that was squatted in 1991 and is now held legally. It is run by the association anders queer e.V., collectively and without a commercial owner: volunteers behind the bar, on the door and with the cleaning, and every mark taken goes back into the house.
What happens in it changes constantly. Parties and bar evenings, concerts, theatre, talks, a games night, a creative night, a drag roast, a schlager party, and separate evenings for FLINTA people and for men. Anyone can propose an evening and organise it themselves, which is why the programme reads the way it does.
The house rules are short and enforced, with an awareness team on party nights and no tolerance for racist, homophobic, transphobic or sexist behaviour. Everyone is welcome regardless of orientation or identity. The downstairs hall is step-free, but the bar and the toilets are up a spiral staircase, and the house says so plainly rather than hiding it.
