Bar Romantis is a gay cocktail bar a few minutes' walk from Hannover main station, and the decoration is the reason people describe it before they describe the drinks. Something over four hundred guardian angels hang from the ceiling, there are dozens of aquariums and terrariums along the walls, and portraits of old film divas are set into the masonry. Kitsch is the word most regulars reach for, and they mean it kindly.
The crowd is mixed, roughly seven men to three women by the bar's own reckoning, and hen parties turn up as often as scene regulars. There is a quiz night and karaoke, and the room is small enough that both take over the whole place.
