Switchboard has been on Alte Gasse since 1988. It was planned by Frankfurt gay groups together with AIDS-Hilfe Frankfurt, and it is still the association's café and cultural centre.
One paid manager runs the kitchen and bar side; the counter itself is worked by around sixty volunteers. There is a full food menu alongside the drinks, which makes it the one place on the street where you can eat properly.
Beyond the bar it functions as the quarter's meeting room. Queer groups hold their regulars' tables here, and the programme runs to readings, talks, parties and community events. The rooms can be booked for private use, though the house asks for a good few weeks' notice.
