The Metropol-Sauna in Essen is the smaller sister of the Frankfurt house of the same name, in a renovated building with a garden, a short walk from the main station.
Inside there are saunas, a whirlpool, a plunge pool, a solarium, a small gym, a bar and cruising areas, along with cabins fitted with video. Foam parties and fetish nights run alongside the ordinary sauna business, and massages are bookable.
One thing to know before travelling: unlike the Frankfurt house, the Essen one does not run every day, and it is sometimes given over to a private event. The site says so itself on the Essen page.
