Im Briefkasten is a gay pub opposite the main post office at Essen main station, and one of the oldest addresses in the city scene. The room is a traditional German Kneipe: a long counter, dark wood, no design ambitions and no dance floor.
The crowd skews older and local. Guests writing about it in the German scene guides put it plainly, that this is the bar in Essen where an older gay man is still at home.
It changed hands in late 2025, when the previous landlord gave up after 21 years and a new landlady took over.
