Schampanja has been open since 1985 and is the small, dark, alternative bar of the Bermudadreieck. Indie, rock and punk on the sound system rather than chart pop.
The walls carry work by contemporary artists. A Canadian artist designed the logo and made the pieces in the toilets, and the bar has had the Pet Shop Boys and Boy George through the door over the years.
The crowd runs mostly thirties and forties, gay men and friends. This is a talking bar, not a dancing one. In 2013 an American magazine put it on a list of the world's 200 best gay bars, the only Cologne entry and one of five in Germany.
