Die Mumu

Bars in Cologne, Germany

About

Die Mumu sits right on Schaafenstraße, in the middle of Cologne's gay bar strip near Rudolfplatz. It opened in 2008, in a space that had housed a string of gay bars since the 1990s. The room is small, so at weekends it fills up fast and spills onto the street.

The crowd skews young, twenties mostly, with a mix of gay men and some lesbians. Music is pop and dance, played by rotating DJs once the weekend party gets going. The bar also runs a karaoke night with a rotating host and a drinks special, which draws a loud, game crowd. There's a coat check at the door, useful given how packed it gets.

Kölsch is the drink of choice here, served in the usual small 0.2l glasses. Expect a squeeze once it gets busy; if you want to actually talk to people, go earlier in the evening. It's a good first or last stop for a night out on the strip, since you can bar-hop up and down Schaafenstraße from here.

No entry fee, no dress code.
