Muttis Bierstube

Bars in Bielefeld, Germany

About

Muttis Bierstube opened in 1972 and was among the first gay bars in Germany. It is still going, a few minutes from the Kesselbrink in central Bielefeld, which makes it the fixed point of the queer scene in Ostwestfalen-Lippe rather than one option among many.

It is a proper Kneipe: one room, a long bar, close quarters. The crowd runs from regulars who have been coming for decades to students who turn up for the club nights. Karaoke is part of the house. There are also DJ nights, mostly pop and trash and trance, and poetry slams.

The early years were hostile. Molotov cocktails were thrown at the door in the 1970s. The bar outlasted that and now runs its own float at the Bielefeld CSD.
