Café de la Mer sits on Place du Marché aux Fleurs, the small square in Montpellier's old town that the gay scene has used as its meeting point for about twenty years. Most of the seating is outside on the square.
It works as a café during the day and a bar later on, with cocktails and food served at the bar. The crowd is mixed, gay and straight together, and runs older and more local than the bars a few streets away. It is the kind of place people arrange to meet at before deciding where the rest of the night goes.
